We left Ketchikan about 9:30 a.m. Alaska Daylight Time. We were hopeful we would be able to keep going, but had identified some safe anchorages where we could duck in if things got ugly in the Dixon Entrance, the first of the three dragons. Weather reports weren’t great, but the buoy and lighthouse reports were more encouraging and we were traveling with the current so we could make good time.
In Revillagigedo Channel we began to see large swells. When we moved past Duke Island where we were completely exposed to the Dixon Entrance the swells were approximately four to six feet with chop. It was quite bumpy for about an hour until we got to Dundas Island where it calmed down. We were relieved so Don crawled into the V-berth for a nap. Along the way we saw several whales and porpoises. Then just before we got to Venn Passage a fog bank settled down on the water taking away our visibility. I woke Don up and we worked our way through the passage using our GPS and radar. We also followed some charter boats that were returning.
We arrived in Prince Rupert at 6:30 p.m. PDT and checked into customs at the Prince Rupert Yacht Club docks. We traveled about 85 miles in about 8 hours. Since we had been cooped up with the rain the day before and our crossing that day, we went for a bike ride around Prince Rupert. It is a beautiful area, but we were sad we had to leave Alaska.
